December 15
Day 19
Listen to: “Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light”
This short hymn packs a powerful punch. After reading the second phrase of the song I had to stop and look up the Angel words in Luke 2 again. What warning was this song talking about? Of course the hymn writer told us, but I missed it at first. What is the warning…don’t be afraid. This is our theme for Advent: FEAR NOT. I never really thought of it as a warning, but it is. Then angels knew that if the shepherds were afraid, they would miss the good news. Fear stalls us, keeps us from acting and hearing. So this warning is for us today. FEAR NOT, for the good news of Christmas is too good to miss.
Take some time today hand over your fears to God in prayer. Let the God salvation handle your fear. As the rest of the song says, Jesus is our confidence and joy. This child Jesus breaks the power of Satan and brings us peace.
May your fear not and receive the peace of Christ this Christmas.
Activity for Kids:
Ask kids what they fear. Then remind them that God can handle their fears and wants us to listen to the words of the angels…don’t be afraid. Pray together and ask God to handle their fears. Do a joyful dance after the prayer.
Move the angles forward one note.
Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, and usher in the morning; O shepherds, shrink not with affright, but hear the angel’s warning. This child, now weak in infancy, our confidence and joy shall be, the power of Satan breaking, our peace eternal making.
