Lent begins Wednesday February 22
Younger Children and Early Elementary
All of the following devotions use the The Jesus Storybook Bible and the page numbers refer to that book.
For very young children you might just tell the story with a few words pointing to the pictures on the pages.
Day 1
Set up your Easter tree and explain that you will be reading key/important stories about God and his love during the 40 days of Lent. Lent is a time we prepare our hearts to get ready for the great mystery of Easter. During the 40 days we will put ornaments on the tree, one for every story, to remind us of all the stories we will learn.
READ: the “Quotations” at the beginning of The Jesus Storybook Bible p. 10 & 11.
ACTIVITY: Read the first quotation again taken from Revelation 22:13. One way to think about beginning and endings is the alphabet. What is the first letter? The last? Let’s look in a dictionary. Discover all the words in between the cover. Jesus is a part of all this.
For younger children: put together an alphabet puzzle or line up alphabet flash cards. Say: Jesus is like the beginning of all the letters and words and the ending.
ORNAMENT IDEAS: Hang the letters A & Z on the tree. Use puzzle pieces, alphabet flash cards, make your own, scrapbooking letters, etc.
This ornament reminds us that Jesus is the beginning and ending of all things.
Older Elementary
All of the following devotions use The Action Bible and the page numbers refer to that book.
Day 1
Set up your Easter tree or prepare a wall to hang reminders of the stories. Explain that you will be reading key stories about God and his love during the 40 days of Lent. Lent is a time we prepare our hearts to get ready for the great mystery of Easter. During the 40 days we will put ornaments on the tree, (or hang them in a prominent place), one for every story, to remind us of all the stores we read. Prints for the ornaments are available below.
READ: p. 7 “Steel yourself for Action”
ACTIVITY: Read the first line in The Action Bible again. God is the original action Hero. God was before everything and will be the hero that makes it to the end. Read Revelation 22:13 in the Bible.
Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters on the Greek Alphabet. Go on-line and see what they look like.
ORNAMENT: Draw or trace the Greek letters Alpha and Omega, decorate them and hang them up. This ornament reminds us that Jesus is the beginning and the ending of all things.
Scripture Reading: Romans 8
